Statewide rail plan connects and guides projects

Wednesday, May 5th, 2010

The key to successful rail transit involves much more than trains following designated routes in a timely fashion. For rail systems to be effective, transportation experts need to develop plans for regional connectivity long before the first tracks are laid.

That’s why the Minnesota Legislature asked the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) to create a unified vision for rail in our region. After months of research, public outreach, and high-level planning, the state’s transit experts created the vision and context that will help rail projects around the state connect to each other.

The plan, which was formally adopted by MnDOT Commissioner Tom Sorel on February 9, 2010, integrates multiple types and routes of transportation, including high-speed, light-rail, commuter, and freight transit. It also identifies the Mississippi River Route as a viable high-speed rail corridor connecting the Twin Cities and Chicago.

“A priority in the plan is intercity passenger rail service between Chicago and the Twin Cities,” said Sorel. “While the corridors for the project have yet to be determined, the connection would support development and economic competitiveness of the Midwest and provide an alternative to automobile and air travel.”

MnDOT estimates that the 20-year capital costs for freight and passenger rail will be between $6.2 billion and $9.5 billion (uninflated). This total assumes $2.2 to $4.4 billion of private investment for freight improvements and $4.0 to $5.1 billion in federal, state, local and additional private investments for passenger rail development.

“This plan recommends that the rail system be developed incrementally with a goal of implementing key passenger services and preparing projects for federal funding as it becomes available,” said Sorel.

On Board Midwest has been a proud partner with MnDOT throughout the planning process. We have attended meetings, promoted forums, and shared news with supporters and other key audiences to support MnDOT’s vision. We are excited that the plan recognizes the importance of the Mississippi River Route, but we also understand that there has to be a regional approach to transit investment. We stand ready to continue to work with MnDOT and all of its partners to bring transit to Minnesota.

The supporters of rail transit in Minnesota will be celebrating National Train Day this Saturday, May 8, at Amtrak’s Midway Station and the Minnesota State Fairgrounds.

Another milestone for our regional transit vision – MnDOT adopts the statewide rail plan

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010

On Board Midwest learned today that MnDOT Commissioner Tom Sorel has officially adopted the Minnesota Comprehensive Statewide Freight and Passenger Rail Plan Final Report. This is another key step forward in our collective efforts to bring new rail investment to our region.

Upgrading tracks along the Mississippi River to create a high-speed rail connection along between Chicago and Saint Paul and restoring Union Depot are key parts of the plan. On Board Midwest congratulates Commissioner Sorel, MnDOT and everyone who came together to help make this plan happen. Minnesota has a clear vision for future rail transit in our region, and we will make sure we make the most of this important opportunity to bring new investment and economic opportunity to Minnesota.

MnDOT’s Policy Advisory Committee meeting this Friday

Monday, November 9th, 2009

Minnesota is working in several ways to create a clear vision with a single voice for rail planning. A key part of this is making sure planners are able to receive important feedback on the plan. The MnDOT Policy Advisory Committee has been working with MnDOT planners throughout the process to get and share information as the planning process has moved forward. This group also shares their reaction with MnDOT staff on plan details and how different projects across Minnesota are included.

The full MnDOT’s Police Advisory Committee will meet on Friday, November 13th . This will be the last time the group gets together before MnDOT officially releases its final plan later this year.

Here’s more information on the meeting.

Policy Advisory Committee members and interested parties:

You are invited to attend the fourth Policy Advisory Committee Meeting for the Minnesota Comprehensive Statewide Freight and Passenger Rail Plan on Friday, November 13, 2009, at the Minnesota History Center. Registration opens at 9:00 AM and the meeting will begin at 9:30 AM. For those unable to attend in person, there will be web-conference and tele-conference arrangements available for your convenience. Information on these options will follow when finalized.

Mississippi River Route and Red Rock part of MnDOT’s state rail plan

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

As MnDOT completes work on their state rail plan, it appears the plan will include a high-speed rail connection along the Mississippi River to Chicago. This is great news for our region and for people who want more transit options in our area. The work to upgrade the corridor for high-speed rail will also advance plans for the Red Rock commuter service to Union Depot. Click here to read a story from South Washington County Bulletin.

MnDOT is also looking at adding a high-speed connection to Rochester. OnBoard Midwest has strongly advocated for a connection to Rochester and we look forward to seeing the entire plan when it is released.

Last night OnBoard Midwest attended another of the MnDOT open house meetings in Mankato. The process to share information and gather public feedback continues. There are a number of different issues and concerns related to rail in Minnesota and through this process MnDOT is helping Minnesota create a comprehensive vision for the future.

We will continue to follow the process and will update you as we learn more.
