Minnesota Public Radio tour of Union Depot

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

Jim McDonough, eChair of the Ramsey County Regional Rail Authority took MPR’s Tom Crann on a tour of Union Depot as plans for restoring the landmark continue to move forward.

St. Paul, Minn. — It’s been nearly 40 years since passengers got on or off a train at St. Paul’s Union Depot. But soon, the historic train station could become a major transit hub once again.

The Ramsey County Regional Rail Authority is expecting to assume ownership of the Union Depot’s concourse this week.

Once it does, the Rail Authority plans to begin renovating the 86-year-old structure, so it can serve a number of different transit lines, including light rail and even high-speed rail to Chicago.

Mississippi River Route and Red Rock part of MnDOT’s state rail plan

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

As MnDOT completes work on their state rail plan, it appears the plan will include a high-speed rail connection along the Mississippi River to Chicago. This is great news for our region and for people who want more transit options in our area. The work to upgrade the corridor for high-speed rail will also advance plans for the Red Rock commuter service to Union Depot. Click here to read a story from South Washington County Bulletin.

MnDOT is also looking at adding a high-speed connection to Rochester. OnBoard Midwest has strongly advocated for a connection to Rochester and we look forward to seeing the entire plan when it is released.
